theatre, posters

These posters are personal projects created in response to the prolific use of photography in Western theatre advertising. Influenced by Czech and Polish artists, the goal was to create more powerful, graphical representations of the plays' themes and content.

<img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/2/81195/1004116/Oedipus.jpg" width="670" height="893" width_o="2048" height_o="2730" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/2/81195/1004116/Oedipus_o.jpg" data-mid="4824496" border="0" align="left"/>
The true tragedy of Oedipus is the protagonist’s inability to escape his own fate. The tarot cards highlight this, whilst the stencil depicts an otherwise noble king. The play’s tragic ending is also foreshadowed in the trails of self-inflicted blood, which spells his name, and doom.

<img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/2/81195/1004116/Ruby.jpg" width="670" height="893" width_o="2048" height_o="2730" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/2/81195/1004116/Ruby_o.jpg" data-mid="4824517" border="0" align="left"/>
The concept of a ‘child missing’ is explored graphically, making the viewer work to understand the metaphor. This is then expanded upon with the addition of the stand (in reference to the play’s mannequin) and the child’s naked, vulnerable state. The houses and tree accentuate the play’s gothic fairy-tale nature, while the brick wall adds reference to reality, where such tragedies can occur.

<img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/2/81195/1004116/R-J.jpg" width="670" height="893" width_o="2048" height_o="2730" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/2/81195/1004116/R-J_o.jpg" data-mid="4824531" border="0" align="left"/>
For a play such as this, little introduction is needed. Although a beautiful image, the tragic nature of the play is present in the lovers’ closed-eye gaze and frozen kiss. Shakespeare’s fascination with the stars, constellations and fate are also present in the rich, starry texture, whilst the futuristic elements are emphasised by the bold font.

<img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/2/81195/1004116/WaitingGodot.jpg" width="670" height="893" width_o="2048" height_o="2730" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/2/81195/1004116/WaitingGodot_o.jpg" data-mid="4824541" border="0" align="left"/>
The central tree is fairly typical of contemporary Godot theatre poster design. However, the additional elements add further detail and highlight the over arching themes of life, death and the absurdity in between.

<img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/2/81195/1004116/ManEquals.jpg" width="670" height="893" width_o="2048" height_o="2730" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/2/81195/1004116/ManEquals_o.jpg" data-mid="4824557" border="0" align="left"/>
Brecht’s ‘Man Equals Man’ deals with identity and the nature of war. Through a series of absurd events, the innocent Galy Gay is slowly transformed into a hardened soldier. Toys from the 80s have been incorporated in the image, in order to appeal to 18-25 year-olds, a missing demographic in Australian theatre. Furthermore, the metaphor created here prompts the viewer to piece the puzzle together, allowing ownership of the visual puzzle.

<img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/2/81195/1004116/Chopper.jpg" width="670" height="893" width_o="2048" height_o="2730" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/2/81195/1004116/Chopper_o.jpg" data-mid="4824564" border="0" align="left"/>
A lesser known Ionesco, ‘Here Comes a Chopper’ is a commentary on World War II and the metaphorical plague that invaded Europe. In typical Ionesco style, it is an absurd farce culminating in extreme consumerism and cannibalism. To highlight these themes, body parts and clothing have been subtly included in the image. Like Ionesco’s humour, one needs to look closely to find it...

Each year, the Adelaide Fringe Festival holds a poster competition, seeking an image that is "...iconic, reflecting the fun, spontaneity and energy of the Adelaide Fringe,” (Fringe Director, Christie Anthoney). Thousands enter for the chance to become a part of Fringe history.

Fringe Girl (below) references the festival's 1960 establishment with a retro-pop aesthetic set against the Adelaide skyline.
